The MICRO/NANO Biomaterials and Stem Cell Engineering Laboratory is located in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami, Coral Gables Campus. Our research focuses on engineering biomimetic biomaterials and micro/nanotechnologies to control cell behavior and develop innovative solutions for human and animal health. At the nanoscale, we design collagen nanofibers and nanofibrous hydrogel platforms to investigate how extracellular matrix-inspired biophysical and biochemical cues regulate stem cell fate, function, and therapeutic potency. Through these studies, we aim to advance stem cell manufacturing technologies and improve the effectiveness of regenerative medicine therapies. At the microscale, we develop microneedle-based platforms for transdermal drug delivery, wearable biosensing, and animal identification and monitoring. These minimally invasive technologies enable localized therapeutic delivery, continuous biomarker sensing, and novel approaches for human and veterinary healthcare. By integrating biomaterials science, polymer engineering, stem cell biology, and micro/nanotechnology, we develop next-generation therapeutic and diagnostic platforms that bridge fundamental discoveries and translational applications in regenerative medicine, biosensing, and animal health.
